RHP Walker Sharp (St Paul HS) threw a 2 hit shutout at the CT Sportsplex Friday night to beat New Haven and capture the 2018 Rusty Zoarski Memorial Trophy in an 8-0 victory.
With the game starting late in the night at 10:45pm, Sharp was in control, escaping a bases loaded jam in the 2nd and was the only threat he'd endure all night. In command of both sides of the plate with his fastball and an excellent cutter, he collected 10 strikeouts over 5 innings of work.
Cian O'Brien (Farmington HS) had 3 RBI to pace the Knights offense. Ethan Rembish (St Paul HS) , Josh Nohilly (Westfield State) , and Matt Cahill (St Paul HS) also added 2 hits apiece.
The game was filled with excellent defensive plays by both teams. CF Josh Cofrancesco (St Paul HS) and SS Howard Rebhun (BCHS) were both robbed of run scoring line drives by the New Haven second baseman and shortstop respectively in the 3 and 4th innings. Ethan Rembish and P Walker Sharp combined on a 4-1 putout to end the third with the bases loaded. 1B left handed David Michaud (Woodland HS) kept the game 2-0 Knights with a fantastic bit of footwork. On a swinging bunt, Sharp fielded and spun to first with the ball running up the line and Michaud tiptoeing to catch and avoid the runner in foul territory. Catcher Chris Mills (St Paul HS) ended a threat in the 3rd with a strong throw to 3rd baseman Ryan Parent (St Paul HS) who gathered the throw and slapped a quick tag on the New Haven shortstop.
